THESE PRECIOUS OBJECTS OF DESIRE

Photo lab, go-anywhere desk, tea case... there’s nothing a trunk can’t do! Patrick-Louis Vuitton remembers the savoir-faire passed down by his grandfather, Gaston-Louis, and the extraordinarily extravagant pieces fashioned for the happy few in the Asnières workshops. He looks back on three of these very special orders.

TEA CASE TRUNK
“This tea case was created in 1926 for the Maharajah of Baroda, who wanted to take it with him on hunting expeditions.”

“We have made countless trunks for eccentric customers. I recall a Chinese customer who asked us for a trunk that would allow him to watch TV and serve coffee at five absolutely anywhere! This tea case in grained leather, a forerunner of Épi leather, was created in 1926 for the Maharajah of Baroda.  Every morning, in his vast palace, a valet would offer to take them out for a ride in a Rolls-Royce, on horseback, or on an elephant!”

WATERCOLOR BOX
“We are packers by profession. To create a fine piece of luggage, you need to be rational. The extravagance is in the objects you transport."

“This trunk is one of my most treasured possessions. You can see the simplicity of its design, the principle of a wooden frame covered with coated cotton canvas or leather, protected by brass corners and locks, and carried by a handle. Every type of leather has a precise function. To create a fine piece of luggage, you need to be rational. The extravagance is in the objects you transport.”

FLOWER TRUNK
“It is actually a downsized version of a cabin trunk which my grandfather would give to his best customers.”

“It is magnificent, filled with peonies and roses in a made-to-measure zinc tub. For me, the flower trunk is more jewelry than luggage. I made the ten last 20 years ago, with accessories recovered from our workshops, and gave them to a number of very beautiful women. When the flowers wilted, they could bring the trunk back and we would transform it into a box for sewing or for cigarettes!”
